The BurroMobile: What Does A Donkey Have In Common With A Library?

As National Library Week draws to a close hopefully book loving people have found a moment to enjoy the library, thank a librarian, and borrow some materials. But just before we put these thoughts away spare a thought for a world where the library comes to you on a donkey.

Yes, donkey!!

Those of us who live in or near cities and are in more westernized worlds have little to no awareness of how it is for others worlds away.

So, in conclusion of this week take a moment and discover the Bibliburros, the donkey library of Columbia in this great little video from the BBC.

Or this older video.

Enjoy!!

It’s National Library Week

April 8 – 14 is National Library Week which is an event to note and celebrate all of the contributions that are made to our lives by libraries and librarians. This is where you get your books, have homework help, find all the information you can ever need (and more that you can’t imagine), have your mind enriched and often make new friends. These are the people who are the keepers of the information and want to share with you how to get it. From the huge libraries holding collections of antiquities and other rare sources of knowledge, to the rural BookMobile that ensures that books and more are available to everyone, to the person who sits behind the desk and can do all the tech stuff that rivals the Geek Squad the library is a place of serious knowledge and skill.

If you want to read some library related books here are some suggestions.

The Man Who Loved Libraries: The Story of Andrew Carnegie by Andrew Larsen
The story of the wealthy Carnegie who funded the building of 2500 libraries around the country and who we can thank for the public library system as we know it.

The Book Thieves by Anders Rydell
This is the story of the Nazis’ systematic pillaging of Europe’s libraries, and the heroic efforts of the few librarians now working to return the stolen books to their owners.

And if you love your library one way to show thanks is by asking your elected officials to continue funding the libraries. The American Library Association needs funding, they need support in Washington and the way to get it is to act on their behalf.

And if nothing else, go and thank a librarian today.

Perfect Book Lovers Vacation – The Open Book, Scotland

Are you a book lover? Do you need a vacation? Are you willing to wait…3 years?!

Well look no further because I got you covered.

This wonderful little bookshop has a room available and for $50 a night, you can run the bookshop!

No better way than to be able to run a bookshop for a week with a little less commitment. Sounds perfect, right?!

CBS did a wonderful little segment on it, which you should check out below!

While it does hurt me a little bit that the bookshop isn’t run by a massive book lover (she watches the movies more than reads the books) it’s still a fantastic idea. There’s also a potential up-and-coming movie about this place. Not sure how to feel about that, but I guess well see.

But if you’re looking for a little quiet get away, and are willing to wait about 3 years for a spot (as she’s completely booked up until then) then this is your destination!

New Years Reading Challenges

New Years Reading Challenges

Are you looking for some reading challenges for the New Year to motivate yourself?

Don’t worry. I have some great suggestions for you!

Penguin has a fantastic reading challenge going on. They give you a prompt for the month and if you can’t think of something, they suggest some great books. Check it out!

Want a classic book challenge? Penguin has you covered too! Each month they have a new classic book suggested to read! I’ll be trying to join that one when I can, as I’d really love to read more classic books this year.

If you want something a little lighter, and more of a ‘bucket list’ style, check out this challenge from PopSugar! It has some fantastic suggestions, and you can definitely find some simpler books to complete it, if you’re pushed for time!

Heroes We Need, But Don’t Deserve

Sometimes people come forward who do something so good for others, even when others don’t do good things to them.

That is exactly what is happening at McPherson Square Library in Philadelphia.

The librarians are having to teach themselves how to administer Narcan because of so many overdoses on their lawn and on their property.

It’s disgusting that the town cannot come to conclusion about what to do, provide the training themselves, or give them the support they need.

Instead, the librarians took it into their own hands.

As Batman once said, “A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy’s shoulders to let him know that the world hadn’t ended.”

I am pretty sure that these librarians qualify. They are going way above what they are required to do.
