You’re Stuck Home During COVID-19, Now What? Here Are 11 Things!

Being stuck home right now during COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus, is going to be a challenge for so many.

Besides it being boring, isolation can be a mental challenge for a lot of people.

While you have to take care of yourself, also think about others around you. Sometimes a quick phone call or text message can change someones day. Get a group chat going, video chat or join some active Facebook groups.

Here are a few things that you can do (not necessarily book related) during this potentially long haul.

1. Keep a schedule.

This may seem a little odd but it will help. Try and get up a relatively regular time (but of course sleep in now and then because you just can) and some days, put effort into how you look. Some of us may feel like wearing sweatpants every day (guilty) but trying to keep getting dressed now, doing your hair and makeup will at least let you feel better, You wear that tux or ballgown around the house because WHY NOT?!

2. Read new books.

Okay, one has to be book-related. We’re a book blog, come on! This is a fantastic time to read something new. Libraries are closed so this is that time to read that book you never could bring yourself to read, like a classic, or re-read an old favorite. It gives you a break from technology and you can go outside and do this to get some fresh air, which is really good for you!

3. Learn a new language.

This is such a great time to learn something new. Places like Duolingo are amazing places to practice a language you know or pick up a new one. Maybe invest in Rosetta Stone (which is amazing) to become bi- or multi-lingual. Language apps are great to practice this language and get some social time in during this isolation.

4. Documentaries.

Sometimes the days can drag but a documentary will waste a few hours and you can learn some things in the process – even if it’s about Aliens (we won’t judge).

5. Video chat with your friends.

This definitely isn’t as cool as it used to be but if you can’t get together with your friends you may as well try and see them. Make some food, get a good drink and some cozy clothes and video chat with them like you’re hanging out together. If you connect your device to a larger screen it may feel like you’re actually there.

6. Learn a new skill!

Like a new language, you could learn a new skill as well. Maybe it’s crafting, maybe it’s trying that guitar you always wanted to try, how to do a handstand or calligraphy. There’s a lot of great videos on YouTube as well as some places are offering free classes during this whole situation. It’ll pass time and you’ll have something incredible at the end of it all.

7. Journal.

Now this may seem a little crazy but I really recommend it. If you can’t talk with people a lot you can write out what you’re feeling. Sure, you can journal on your computer but when you write it out you really get to think and spend some time writing how you feel. It doesn’t have to be happy. You could say that you’re really struggling and just don’t feel great or that you absolutely love being stuck at home. You’ll be able to look back on it one day and remember how you kicked COVID-19’s butt.

8. Catch up on your shows.

I wouldn’t recommend binge watching just because there may be a long stretch and you want to make sure you have some good stuff to watch, but you can use this time to try a few shows you normally wouldn’t do.

9. Write a letter.

As long as the post office is operational (which I hope it will continue to be) this is a great time to bring back letter writing. It gives you something to look forward to, you can practice lettering and calligraphy and just do something new.

10. Go outside and get some fresh air.

Life tends to keep us inside as students or office workers so this is a great time to go outside. Take that conference call on the balcony, take some of your readings to your park if it’s still open (remember, social distancing!) or go into your garden. If you can’t do these things, open your window and just stick your head out for a little while. Make sure to get some fresh air and some sun if you can.

11. Foster an animal if you can.

If you don’t own an animal, or want more, this is a great time to foster. Shelters are struggling, it’s nearly kitten season and you could always use a play-mate. It’s not permanent (but it could be if you want) and may help you along. If you have a landlord, make sure to talk to them and see if an exception can be made. Also make sure you’re fulling able for this and committed. It may only be a few months but remember that dogs have to be walked and cats have to have their litter changed.

Gentefied (2020- ) [NETFLIX TV Show Review]

Summary

“Based on the digital series of the same title, Gentefied centers on three cousins who band together to keep their Grandfather’s popular Boyle Heights taco shop in business as the neighborhood becomes more gentrified. Throughout the show’s first season the cousins confront their differences in their connections to their community, their heritage, and their commitment to the family business, all while navigating larger themes of gentrification and the marginalization of Latinx’s in America.”

Review

Now and then Netflix recommends something to me at the top that I immediately stop everything for to watch. This one started auto-playing at the top and after that I clicked play. I am not disappointed.

Similar to In The Heights
This show kind of had a similar feeling to In The Heights with the wanting to get a better life, having a dream, Latino/Latina’s fighting for acceptance, queer acceptance and whites coming in and thinking they know best. It really had a mix of everything as well – love, comedy, pain, small political statements and more.

Powerful and moving.
This was a simple show. About a family, a family Taco shop, and then the secondary story of the queer love and acceptance in an already marginalized group of people. But my god, did it have you hooked, really connected with the characters and at certain moments got super angry at people you wouldn’t think you would. There were subtle political statements which were very pertinent to the story and just made it a little more serious. Much of the show was in Spanish or some mix of Spanglish which I personally loved. It made it so much more authentic. I don’t love shows that are based in a community and/or country that don’t utilize the language or only utilize it a tiny bit now and then.

Colorful and a beautiful representation.
This was a very colorful show and represented these communities quite well – however one must remember that while this show did show struggles certain things got resolved a little too perfectly. It’s not a documentary but just a show about these communities so they make it as real as possible without it maybe becoming too depressing (unless that’s the point of this show). So while it was a beautiful representation it wasn’t 100% accurate on all of it. That certainly doesn’t detract from the story at all because it had this kind of story-like quality but was real enough that you were able to connect that these people were human.

And the ending. OMG, you’ll have to watch it but the ending absolutely killed me and I need a Season 2 as soon as possible. I just sat there like, “NO! WHAT?!” because it was one of those endings. I also really wanted Tacos while watching it….makes you super hungry.

Happy Watching!

1984 by George Orwell [Book Review]

1984 by George Orwell

 Summary

“Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching…

A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.”

Review

With the amount of school work I’ve been struggling to get through recently I have had zero interest in reading but this book has been at the back of my mind for ages. So, 1 week ago I decided to give it a go and holy cow was it a wild ride!

An analysis of our present.
Honestly, this book was terrifying to read. It was kind of like look at the current state of affairs in the 21st century with the claims of Fake News, false videos being shared as true documentation of events and events being rewritten as those who remember it die out (i.e. denying the Holocaust). While this book is called 1984 and references a past time, it is still completely timeless and just translates to any period. In the United States, following the 2016 election, this book had a sudden spike in popularity bringing back the ideas of Big Brother and a government attempting to skew the information to fit their narrative.

Technology is always listening in, with our famous Alexa’s, Google Homes and Siri being around for our beck and call. The devices within 1984 were incredibly similar to what everyone so willingly invites into their homes – except these devices were known to always watch and listen. The New York Times wrote an incredible post about why Why ‘1984’ Is a 2017 Must-Read and it still certainly applies.

A reality check of what could happen.
While it does have a scary number of parallels to what is happening now, this book puts everything in the extreme. To me this is an incredibly important read for people to understand what could happen. You’re probably thinking ‘but oh no, the government would never re-write history or that would never-ever happen’. No one wants to think it will happen until one day we wake up and our freedoms are taken away – we do this by inviting devices into our homes that aren’t secure that people can hack into.

While I don’t believe it will ever come to this because there are enough people who are aware of the dangers, that may not be enough. As the book liked to point out, it doesn’t necessarily matter who is fighting against it because those in power always can silence them. But on the flip side, you can kill people but you can never kill an idea.

It had it all: secrecy, revolt, love and violence/passion.
I say violence/passion because in a way the book makes those two interchangeable. But it had lots of secrecy with you wondering who would be caught when, revolt against the ‘powers that be’ being Big Brother. It had love – or probably more accurately lust. Yes, there were some adult romance themes but nothing too rude because this is an older book and those kind of things aren’t anything like they are in 21st century books. All the sex in this book was necessary to the story and the world that these characters lived in and really made the book even more raw.

Overall, it’s an eye-opening masterpiece which will chill you to the bone.
This is one of those books that I think will stick with you – like Fahrenheit 451 did. This book is such a wonderful read, not difficult but really gets you thinking. My dreams were super crazy after reading this at bed time but I adored it! I highly recommend this book to everyone because not only is it an eye-opener, but it’s a classic and certainly a conversation piece.

Happy Reading!
