My Top 5 Must Read Titanic Books

This post contains affiliate links. Please see my full disclosure here.

As in 6th grade I did a year-long Expert Project on the Titanic, I know quite a lot about her and am completely obsessed. I have watched almost all the documentaries, follow the RMS Titanic Inc Facebook page, have seen the movie, and have read many books about this amazing ship. So I thought I would share some of my top 5 favorite books and some of the documentaries/movies which I found amazing and a must watch/read.

So the books first…

1. What Really Sank the Titanic by Jennifer Hooper McCarty and Time Foecke (New Forensic Discoveries)

What Really Sank the Titanic cover via Amazon

2. A Night to Remember by Walter Lord
(never finished it but read bits and pieces and it was really good)

A Night to Remember via Amazon

3. Titanic in Photographs by Daniel Klistorner and Scott Andrews

Titanic in Photographs via Amazon

4. Returning to Titanic by Robert D. Ballard and Michael S. Sweeney
Robert Ballard was the one who discovered the resting place of the ship

Return to Titanic via Amazon

5. Magic Tree House Fact Tracker #7: Titanic: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House #17: Tonight on the Titanic by Mary Pope Osbourne and Will Osbourne and Sal Murdocca as the Illustrators

Titanic Fact Tracker via Amazon

a) of course you have to read the fictional Tonight on the Titanic by Mary Pope Osbourne to get the full effect for the younger readers.

For the movies…

1. Titanic (big duh)

2. Ghosts of the Abyss – a film by James Cameron

This is a must see as the footage was spectacular and also had an amazing soundtrack!

A Titanic Poem

I wrote this poem quite a few years ago and I did share it, but since I have not created any new ones and could not find a good Titanic poem, I had to share this one again.

Just in the last 5 minutes of the Titanic being above the water
Did everyone realize that the end was extremely near

The lights of the ship started to dim
And suddenly they completely went out
It was dark to start with but now it was like being in ink
The only way to tell that people were around you were by hearing their voices

The voices of the ones shouting out to loved ones
And the voices of the ones crying because they knew that the end was near

Deck after deck after deck after deck
All the decks slowly went under the dark, ominous, looking water

I then turned my head to the bridge decks of the ship
I first noticed the people on the decks
Then I saw Captain Smith standing in the bridge.
My eyes just clung to him
I could not look away.

The water had now entered the bridge
And was slowly making its way up Captain Smith’s legs
It was at his thighs
Then his waist
And then I saw him no more
“He died a hero.”

The ship was now almost fully under the water
Just the 4 funnels and the 2 masts were visible
Then the impossible happened
The stern rose completely out of the water
30, 40, 60 feet and higher into the air
It was now at a 45 degree angle.
And slowly and quietly the ship slipped out of my sight.

The Titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40 pm on April the 14, 1912. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

If you want to follow a live twitter feed that will follow the sinking of the Titanic, click here. No twitter account is necessary to read what is happening.

I know I will as I am OBSESSED with this ship and its disaster.

Check back later today for my top 5-10 must read Titanic books for all ages.
