Book Blogger Appreciation Week September 13-17, 2010

Not talking about books today, but I am going to talk about myself.

Book Blogger Appreciation Week is coming up and today the nominations go in. I personally think it is a little interesting how you have to nominate yourself. So, as you have to nominate yourself, I, MyLibraryCardWoreOut, decree that this blog is in the running. Talk about modesty. So, part of the requirement is to choose where you blog fits in. I chose Best YA Book Blog and Best Written (because my mom told me to (just kidding)). So here are some of the best YA review and best Written reviews.

Summer, Summer, Time Is Here!!!!!

Summer time is once again upon us. And do you know what summer mean for me. Well of course you don’t so that is why I am going to tell you. Summer time mean swimming, summer homework, being with friends (if they are around), going on holiday, and best of all reading as many books as I want. Oh and watching lots of movies too. But it also mean more blogging time and more posts for my fellow readers.

One thing that I thought of doing was to do a lot of books to movies this summer. As my readers will have a lot of time off, you can read the book and then enjoy the movie afterward. And my suggestion is that you always read the books first because the movies are sometimes different and/or edited. I personally find that watching the movie before I read the book is not that good because you expect one thing from the book but you get something different. That is just my advice.

Some of the books to movies that you can watch out for are….

The Chronicles of Narnia
The Golden Compass
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Alex Rider
and many others.

Hope that you will enjoy the books and movies that I am going to review.

Double Dog Dare

Summer is almost here (for those of us in the northern hemisphere) and plans are being made for what to do and where to go.
And what to read?
Well, as you know, the public library is a great place to find all sorts of fun and interesting things to keep you busy and active over the summer (and anytime for that matter) whether you are a kid or not. And so are bookstores. Here at My Library Card Wore Out we believe in reading ~ no matter whether it is the contents of the cereal box, the telephone directory (quite an interesting read) or the entire series of Harry Potter. Any place that encourages you to read, and enjoy it is to be given a big thumbs up! So, what great news to hear that Borders Books is once again having summer reading “Double Dog Dare” where every reader 12 and under who reads 10 books gets one free! How cool is that??? And the book choices are good. Of course, you are probably over 12 and this won’t help you, but pass this information onto younger kids you know to help them love to read too. For those 12 and up (and yes this includes adults) Borders also does a lot of great summer books that are usually” Buy 2 get 1 free”, or something like that. This is a good way to fill the gaps in your personal library. And limits the chance of the your librarian giving you an odd look when you return your books and sand falls out of them and they smell of suntan lotion!! So, start planning your beach reads now and get reading!

Special Post from the UK

I am sorry that I have not posted for a while, but I am back with some interesting things. As I write I am in England (looking for books that haven’t made it to the US) and looking for other interesting things. Today is not going to be a book review, but a Top 20. The Sunday Telegraph (a really serious paper in the UK) has a section called BOOKS LIFE. and last week there was an article about “The 20 Greatest Children’s Books Ever” by Lucinda Everett, and I though that I must share it with my readers. Some of the books mentioned are uniquely British so you might not have either heard of them or seen them. So let us not dilly-dally and get on with the books.

  1. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  2. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
  3. Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
  4. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
  5. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
  6. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  7. The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton
  8. Babar by Jean De Brunhoff
  9. Treasure Island by RL Stevenson
  10. The Railway Children by E Nesbit
  11. Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
  12. Winnie – The – Pooh by AA Milne
  13. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
  14. The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
  15. Peter and Wendy (Peter Pan) by JM Barrie
  16. Watership Down by Richard Adams
  17. the Story of Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson
  18. The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith kerr
  19. the Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
  20. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Those are the Top 20 books in the UK. I have only read bout 7 of them. How about you? But I will work on it while I am here. Have you read any of them? Are there any books that you think should be on this list?

Lucinda Everett has also listed “The 10 Worst Villains Of All Time”.

  1. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – The Witch
  2. Harry Potter – Lord Voldemort
  3. Matilda – Mrs. Trunchbull
  4. The Jungle Book – Shere Khan
  5. One Hundred and One Dalmatians – Cruella De Vil
  6. The Dr Seuss Books – The Grinch
  7. The Wonderful Wizard of OZ – The Wicked Witch of the West
  8. Peter and Wendy (Peter Pan) Captain Hook
  9. The Witches – The Grand High Witch (Of All the World)
  10. Fantastic Mr Fox – Boggis, Bunce and Bean

What do you think? Which ones do you agree with?  Any other villains that you think  should be added to this list? Hopefully these are not the only bad people and there are some others. Tell me who should be added to this list!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightening Thief By Rick Riordan

Summary

Weird things are happening to Percy. It stated a long time ago but it gets weirder still. When his class goes on a field trip, he gets into trouble. When his teacher takes him inside the museum to talk to him a weird thing happens to her. She turns into a demon and tries to kill him, but fortunately one of his other teachers throws him a pen and it turns into a sword. He is safe. For now. He finds out later that his teacher was a Kindly One. A monster from Hades, God of the Underworld. When his mother realizes he is in danger, she tells him part of his story and he takes him to Half-Blood-Hill, a camp for people like him. But on the way his mother gets killed, or so he thought, by a monster. When he arrives at the camp they take him in and he sees that all this weird stuff is going on. Then he finds out some interesting information.  He is then sent on a quest. He is sent on a quest to find Zeus lightening bolt. If he does not find it there will be a war. A war of the worlds. Will Percy Jackson get to the lightening bolt before the monsters get to him????

Review

WOW. This book was AWSOME. It was so COOL. I would definitely read it again and again and again and again and I think you get the point. It was really good. I know that I say that about a lot of books but this one was out of this world (literally.) I would read it agin but I want to work my way through the series and then I will read the series many times over. Just like people read Harry Potter about a gazillion times over. I will read this series a gazillion times over.

It was

REALLY

good.

The characters were described very well and the suspense….. Don’t get me started. There was a lot of suspense which made the book AWSOME and there was a little romance, betrayal, and all that fun stuff. It was really very good. It looked good to me but I did not expect it to be that good.

Happy Reading!!!!!
