Do NOT Burn Your Books – Donate Them! [A Rant] 12

This post is all my personal opinion and you don’t need to agree with me at all. I welcome other opinions so please do comment down below!

Recently, on Instagram, I saw a post by an individual stating that they absolutely hated their Harry Potter books and because of that they decided to burn them! The post caught my attention and I just had to check it out, fully believing that it was a prank and/or click-bait. Sadly…it wasn’t!

I went on to read that they didn’t like Harry Potter because it was too dark. To me it seemed like the individual was a fanatic or something, pulling in religious quotes about how magic is bad and just ripping apart the entire community. It wasn’t exactly written well, something a little childish in my opinion, BUT, that is not the point of this post. I’m here to talk about NOT BURNING BOOKS! Dear god…please don’t!

Give the book a second life if you’re doing it because it’s old!

I’m not generally one for defacing books, but sometimes you get books that are too well worn and falling apart, so painting them, or painting on the pages, I’m not completely against. It does give them another life in a way if they are too far gone to be read. But even then, you really need to be careful what books you choose. But burning books?!

The message behind book burning, and it’s history, is horrible!

Book burning was used in the 1930’s, during WWII, by the Nazi’s. It was a way for them to control what people were reading and to get rid of anything that they felt was wrong. The burning of books stands as a very powerful symbol of intolerance.

People still do this now, burning religious texts to get a message across. If you burn something, it shows you have absolutely no respect for it. And to me, that is beyond wrong.

If you don’t like it, donate it!

If you are going to burn a book and clearly don’t want it anymore, you might as well donate it. You can even sell it for a few dollars and make some money back! Someone else will appreciate the book, especially when it’s popular books such as Harry Potter! Someone who may not be able to afford a full price book could get a book they’ve always wanted!

It doesn’t matter if you detest the book, but it’s not really your place to be burning the written word. It’s the utmost form of disrespect and to book people, rude! To authors it is extremely hurtful.

Just why would you do it?!

So overall, if you ever have a moment that you want to destroy a book, just take a moment to breathe and think what other people may view you as when you do it. How others may take your message.

For me, I immediately had to unfollow because I can’t, in good conscience, follow someone who does that. I know people burn books as art symbols or something, and I don’t agree with that either, but burning it because you detest it, that’s just a whole new level of wrong for me personally.

What do you think about this? I’m sure quite a few will agree (based on many things I’ve read), but if you agree with it, I’d love to hear why!

Review

I’ve been waiting a while to see this movie, especially after I had read the first book of the series last year. After the first book, I was really wondering how they were going to put all of that into a movie, especially with how complex and confusing it was. I really struggled to write the book review for it because it was one of those books that was quite difficult to summarize and turn into words. So how would they visualize it all?

Well I got my answer. They dumbed it down….a lot. While the basic idea was there, it was nothing like the first book. I mean they started to play around with what was given to them. In the book, there was a lot more of it based on a derelict world with everything destroyed. It felt like a wild west kind of book, but the movie was based more in NYC and a little bit in the waste land around the other universes. I mean, sure it worked, but if you read the book you would most likely be a little disappointed.

Don’t get my wrong, I did really enjoy it and I absolutely loved the cast. Idris Elba was a perfect Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey was an amazing Man in Black, but I felt like there just could have been so much more. It quickly explained who the Man in Black was, and that he was magical, but in the book you never really understood. Of course I only ever read book one. But considering how many books that the movie series had to work with, with each book averaging about 500 pages (and some as long as 800!) they honestly could have done so much.

The movie was also only 95 minutes too. Harry Potter Book 1 was the same length and it got a movie that was over two hours. Of course, it was much more popular but I feel when you make a movie based on a book, you need to stick a little closer.

Movie Review: The Dark Tower

They answered a lot of questions that were left unanswered, or made you wonder, in the book. It was clear the movie ended in a way that meant that another one wasn’t needed. So if you watch it, you wouldn’t be waiting for a second movie. With the book, it had a similar way to end, like you could just not continue to read, but there were so many questions left unanswered. The movie was a nice neat package.

Visually the movie was incredible. it was beautiful and the gun-work rivaled that of John Wick 1 and 2 (which I thought was impossible)! But the Gunslinger is supposed to be incredible with weapons. It was just impressive to see that.

But the idea of the book, the deeper psychological and philosophical idea seemed to be completely ignored in the book. So I was a little upset about that.

C’est la vie…nothing you can really do.

If you haven’t read the book, it’s a good movie. If you have read it, you might be a little underwhelmed.

Happy Watching!

Hogwarts Acceptance Letter {Hand Made}

Have you been waiting for your Hogwarts Acceptance Letter for too long? Are you ready to fight the forces of evil? No need to wait any longer!

Later this week I will opening a shop containing Hogwarts Acceptance Letters! How exciting is that. Scroll down to see what you’ll get, what is customize-able and prices (most important!).

Harry Potter Acceptance Letter

Your purchase will include one (1) acceptance letter, one (1) list of items needed at school and one (1) ticket to Platform 9 3/4 of course!

Prices will range from about $10-12 depending on what you want. These letters are full customize-able! You can either purchase the traditional Harry Potter Acceptance Letter to use for props in your photos, or to just have (which is $10) or you can add some things!

With your purchase, if you want it customized, you will put the name of the recipient, their address and where their room is located (to make them feel like Harry Potter)! Don’t worry, no one will see this information except me! The top of the letter and the envelope will then be customized to be for them.

The prices will vary depending on how you want it to be delivered. I can ship it to you (the person ordering) in an Manila envelope which you can open and then use the letter as you wish. If you choose that option, then the letter and the envelope will have the room location on it. Or you can have the letter mailed directly to the recipient. If that is the case, then room location will only be on the letter (as I don’t think the mail service delivers to your bedroom just yet!).

Those features mentioned above may bump the cost up a little if you have it put inside another envelope. You can also have the wax seal, or not. Final costs will be calculated this week before I put it up for sale!

Currently this is only open to the U.S. and Canada (due to International shipping costs) but I hope to open it internationally eventually! (Subject to change depending on the final calculations this week!)

Butterbeer? Starbucks?!

Apparently Starbucks, after J.K. Rowling announced Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, came up with a Butterbeer Frappucino. I don’t know if they’re still selling it in some places, however, you can make it yourself!

Just click here!

How yummy does it look! I’d love to try it.
