Banned Book

Welcome To Dystopia: Time To Learn

We’re just going to start with the fact that books are political. They always have been. Authors like George Orwell, Ray Bradbury…stories like Harry Potter, Star Wars – they all have political undertones and messages. Every book is political or political adjacent. The big bad authoritarian ruler dragon evil creature thing trying to subjugate the people and the people rise up.

So now that that is out of the way, books, bookstagram, reading, literature – IT IS POLITICAL. And I sure as heck am going to be political here.

If you don’t like that then you are welcome to your opinion and you are welcome to close this tab or unfollow. I’ll be soooooo devastated

And no, I will not be demure, quiet, classy, or whatever you want to say. Gloves are off and this is survival time.

So, for those of you who are promoting love, acceptance, human rights, dignity, critical thinking and everything that goes with it, this is your safe space. If you don’t, then frankly you’re not welcome here.

But, maybe you can learn a thing or two if you read a thing or two.

I want to list some books that you should read, if you have not, to pick up on those political messages, to see where the United States of America may be heading….to really open your eyes.

And don’t skim these books. Read them, take notes, really digest what they are getting at because your survival, analysis and forward planning may depend on it. Read them, gift them to the younger generation to read.

And these books are just the start. There’s also tons of movies – Star Wars, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Firefly, V is for Vendetta,

The Future of Books with Project 2025

While I try to avoid getting political on this website, some things you just cannot stay silent about. I’m sure you’ve been seeing a lot about Project 2025 going around right now.

If you don’t know anything about it, I’d do some reading up on it. And if you’re brave enough, you can go to the website where the actual like 900 page book is hosted to actually read it. And I would recommend you sometimes do when people mention parts of it. There is a lot of misinformation out there and misinterpreting of the words, sometimes to make parts seem way worse than it is and then to make other bits seem better.

But the part that I want to focus on today is the bit wanting to ban pornography. Now I’m not going to be focusing on actual pornography – such as the videos with live actors and adults and the dangerous world that can lead into with illegal actions.

I’m talking more about smut writing today and the larger impact that this will have on the reading community.

Pornography by definition is “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings.” And smut books have just that.

So what did Project 2025 say?

“Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance, is not a political Gordian knot inextricably binding up disparate claims about free speech, property rights, sexual liberation, and child welfare. It has no claim to First Amendment protection. Its purveyors are child predators and misogynistic exploiters of women. Their product is as addictive as any illicit drug and as psychologically destructive as any crime. Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders. And telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shuttered.”

There’s a few bits in here that should really worry you. Let me just call it out for you.

“The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders. And telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shuttered.”

Just read that a few times and digest it.

Now while we don’t know what this is going to look like in action, the broad wording allows for very broad interpretations. And until you are told otherwise (and even then), you assume that very broad interpretation. That’s usually how it works out. So do you know what this could mean? This could mean:

  • Authors could be imprisoned because they wrote it (who knows if it is going forward or retroactively)
  • Publishing houses could get fined or employees and leaders in those places could go to jail
  • Teachers who have books with adult themes or sex ex books could be registered as a sex offender
  • Librarians who have smut books in their library could be registered a sex offender
  • Book store owners and staff could be jailed
  • Sites that hose their information could be banned – if you have book excerpts
  • Fanfiction sites would be removed

The list just goes on and on.

And you may be saying to yourself, this would never happen. This is too extreme and would never happen like that. Sure, it probably won’t happen over night but it most certainly can happen. It is just a matter of time. We saw how fast other rulings went into effect and how fast it caused damage.

They said the same thing about what Hitler did and tried to do. If we fail to learn from history it will repeat itself.

Now I’m not telling you who to vote for at all because living in the United States of America we have something that so many other countries don’t – the freedom to choose and vote for who we want. But certain people in this election may try to change that.

And for those of you interested in not voting because you don’t like the other guy, just remember, every person that does not vote is technically skewing the numbers which gives the other guy a chance.

We are voting between freedom and not freedom. And only one of those options will allow you to speak out if you don’t like what the leadership is doing. The other option will restrict your freedom, remove your free speech and begin to crack down.

This is exactly the kind of things that George Orwell was writing about in 1984 and in The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.. We are seeing the beginnings of it and if you can’t see it then you need to take a good hard look around. This should absolutely terrify you.

They’ve already begun to come for our books by banning them. This is just the next step.

The Rainbow Book Bus: Book Freedom & Inclusion

You know what you are missing from your life? A bus that brings books that allows everyone to read whatever they want while supporting everyone! If that’s what you need, then you need the Rainbow Book Bus!

I recently came across the Rainbow Book Bus and my goodness am I glad that I did. I love this idea!

According to their website:

“Through our flagship bookmobile program, The Rainbow Book Bus distributes diverse books to communities with reduced access to them. We aim to support and amplify organizations that oppose censorship, promote literacy or empower historically underrepresented storytellers. We work towards educational freedom by fighting existing censorship and reacting to future attacks aimed to reduce access to inclusive stories for young people.”

Their reasoning is to help combat all the book censoring that has been going on recently across the United States.

The bus was designed by queer artists India Torrez and Paco May and the bus is absolutely beautiful!

From their website rainbookbus.org

To learn a little more about this bus, definitely check out this video below!

Their tour has begun and as of 14 March they are in Louisiana and working their way around some southern states. You can check out their tour to see if they’re going to be stopping somewhere nearby! This book bus tour is connected with the opening of Allstora which was created by the absolutely wonderful RuPaul! Their goal with the bus is to give away 10,000 books by the end of the year – specifically books that have been criticized and banned.

I think this is such a fun and engaging way to get awareness out there, help to bring banned/restricted books to others and have some fun while doing it!

Book covers are leaning on the Rainbow Book Bus, a converted school bus whose stop sign has been changed to say “Slay.”

From NY Times post.

Books are for everyone and no one has the right to restrict your access or ban them!

Banned Book Website List

I got an interesting email later today saying that I had been included in a list of 30 banned book information websites. It was quite an honor to be included in this list, along side PEN America and Unite Against Banned Books!

I wanted to share the website that lists the 30 websites as if you are looking to keep on top of Banned Book information, or understand what is going on more, this list does contain some really great (and reputable) websites that I would highly recommend. A lot of the top 10 in the list I use regularly!

Check out this page of 30 Best Banned Book Blogs and Websites and peep me at spot 21.

Book Bans Spiking Over Last School Year [Banned Books Week 2023]

PEN America recently published a report about the spiking in book bans in schools over the last year.

They found that it had spiked 33% in the last year, compared to the previous one.

And which state has the most book bans? Florida, which accounted for 40% of the bans.

Misleading rhetoric like “porn in schools”, “sexually explicit” and “age appropriate” were used as the basis of arguments to remove the material.

What has been one of the drivers of this? Misleading and very vague legislation.

And according to their research,

“In the 153 school districts across the country that banned a book during the 2022-23 school year, 124(81 percent) have a chapter or local affiliate nearby of one or more of the three most prominent national groups pushing for book bans — Moms for Liberty, Citizens Defending Freedom, and Parents’ Rights in Education. These districts are where 87percent (2,912) of book bans have occurred.”

This is a report that I highly recommend that you read, especially if you are a parent of a child in schools.
