We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson [Book Review]

Summary

“Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the struggle that ensues when a cousin arrives at their estate.”

Review

This book honestly was not even on my radar until I saw a trailer for the movie coming out soon. So immediately I had to read the book. I adored Jackson’s other book, The Haunting of Hill House, and was really curious about her other works. I certainly wasn’t disappointed with this wonderful read.

A perfectly manageable size.
This book is honestly the perfect length. It’s about 150 pages and a relatively quick read. With my course load at the moment, I’m trying to avoid really meaty texts (which is why Anna Karenina is taking me so long to get through) so something that is more bite sized is my style. But don’t be fooled that just because it is a small book doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot going on with lots of underlying meanings and messages.

A slow beginning and then suddenly a twist happens.
This book isn’t going to keep you on the edge of your seat or biting your nails, like I’m sure the movie will. The movie, while looking fantastic, will definitely need to spice the book up because it was relatively simple with just a few darker themes and ideas. Nothing creepy. Just kind of a ‘woah’ moment. If you choose to read this, don’t feel discouraged that nothing is happening. The twists begin about 3/4 through. The beginning is a large set up to really give this atmospheric vibe to the town and the family.

Giving life to houses seems to be Jackon’s ‘thing’.
While this did book didn’t give life to the house like it did in The Haunting of Hill House, there certainly were these underlying ideas of this house being alive. To me, I loved that. This book didn’t have any ghosts or anything like that, but you constantly were questioning if there was something more going on. But never really got to know. I adored that because it made it real but with this supernatural air about it.

This is one of those books that keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen next. You are constantly wondering if there is something supernatural going on or if it’s just your imagination. It’s fantastically written with all these little ideas being weaved throughout the pages which makes you need to keep reading to find out what happens!

Honestly, I can’t say too much about this book because it was incredibly short. It’s a simple book with a few twists that just kept me reading. It was honestly amazing. I read it and my mum read it as well and we have a generation between us but we were able to share an experience and it was so wonderful. It’s a ‘read in a day’ kind of book. And with the movie coming, this is definitely one to read.

Review

So I have been sooooo excited for this movie from when I saw the trailer a few months back. It just looked so epic and so beautiful and the music used in the trailer just caught my attention and had me watching the trailer over and over. So, I was literally counting down the days until December 7th and the release on Netflix.

I’m honestly quite impressed with some of the things that Netflix has been releasing recently. They’ve been high quality and really well done. So clearly Netflix is doing incredibly well!

Rohan Chand as “Mowgli” in the Netflix film “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle”

Beautiful visuals!
The visuals in this movie were incredible. There were a few moments that the animations were…not perfect, but it didn’t really bother me because it gave it that story book quality. It wasn’t too fluid that it was like a real life movie, but it was fluid enough that it looked real with it harping back to it’s origins.

Darker than I thought.
If you’re looking for another retelling of The Jungle Book, then this isn’t really it. This movie was quite dark, definitely for older viewers. There was violence and such, so if your little one likes The Jungle Book, this isn’t really on the same level as it. It covers some darker issues and some of the scenarios were quite dark!

“We look into their eyes as we kill them, so the soul doesn’t depart alone.”

Bagheera

A retelling of a classic – with a new twist.
So this really was a retelling of the classic story with a few changes. There was no King Louis and there were no songs like were in the original story. It was another angle on the life of Mowgli, something a little more realistic with a twist of colonialism In a way.

Baloo…a little creepy!
I always loved Baloo as he’s such a cuddly character in the story, but in this one, it looked like Baloo had been to war and back and was a little worse for wear. He just looked so much rougher than the others and I wasn’t expecting that as he’s just the cuddliest one in the original, so that was a different twist

Incredible voice actors!
I really did enjoy the actors that they chose for the voices! They fit well and Benedict Cumberbatch has completely nailed this evil kind of voice. 10/10~

Overall I highly recommend.
This was an absolutely fantastic movie and I do recommend. It isn’t totally heartwarming and I was crying, I’ll say that. But it was such a beautiful watch. The story was incredible, the visuals amazing and overall it was just such a ride! As someone who grew up with the originals, I’m loving all of these retelling’s of classics from when I was a child. They’re just enough more mature to really draw me in again, but harp back to my childhood enough to remind me of the original story!

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson [Book Review] 19

Summary

“First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.”

Review

As it’s spooky season, I had to give some of the classics for this season a read. I’ve read all the basics like Dracula , Stephen King books, Clive Barker booksand many others. But this one, I hadn’t read.

I recently started a small book club with my mum, so we read books together, and as we were going to be quite busy this month, this was the perfect book – it’s not too long and not exactly a difficult read.

Spooky without being scary.
As the book is quite old, their idea of scary is not our idea of scary, which was kind of nice. I wasn’t reading this book and absolutely terrified or questioning if I could read it at night. It was just a classic kind of scary read, like Dracula. So as an autumnal read, this one fits the bill perfect. I’d say 15 and older could give this one ago, if they can get around some of the strange writing styles.

A little slow but picked up suddenly.
Now, since it’s an older book, I have to be careful with this comment. Books now are written at a much faster pace to appease the reader. This one had a very slow beginning that had you questioning exactly when something was going to happen. You were nearly halfway through the book before you even made it to Hill House and 3/4 of the way through before the strange stuff started happening. It made the read a little slow in a sense, but you also wanted to get through it faster to find out what was going to happen and when.

Nothing like the modern movie The Haunting.
In early 2000’s, a movie with Liam Neeson and other famous actors came out called The Haunting which is based off of this book. I went into this book thinking it was going to be like the movie. This movie is a common one many have seen, so I’m going to say now that if you think it’ll be like the movie, then you’re wrong. It definitely had some parallels and the overall idea was similar, but it wasn’t the same for the most part. The ending especially.

Eleanor is a little odd, just naturally.
What adds to the book is the fact that the main character is quite…out there. She’s odd so even from the beginning you just seem to be thrown off from the way she speaks and thinks. It actually puts you off balance as a reader. The speaking patterns are all over the place, which seems to confuse you. While you were reading it can be a little confusing, as her thought processes is like a roller-coaster, but afterwards you realize that it adds to the whole story!

Kind of shocking the ending.
You had this idea of how it was going to end and it didn’t end that way at all. Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil anything, but just be prepared to not be ready for what happens. You think you can figure it out and then boom.

Overall, I absolutely loved the book. Even though it was a little slower, it’s a classic and such a good read. It’s not needed around Halloween but it’s great for autumn in general. It’s bite sized, so no need to worry about it being a massive reading commitment.

I easily give this book a 5 our of 5 teacups!
